There's much ...Time of possession is a canard. There's much too much variability depending on the play mix. The really important measure is the wall clock time (the actual time the defense is off the field, resting), and that's going to go a lot more to the number of plays than to the amount of time we take off the clock. The problem is and will always be three-and-out drives, and those are exactly as bad if it's three-runs-and-out taking 2:00 off the clock as if it's three-passes-and-out taking 0:30 off the clock.

Anyone would have thought, based on the hue and cry after the Michigan State game, that our defense was gassed and we crumbled at the end of the game after being called upon in one too many possessions. Nothing could be further from the truth, though; we stoned MSU on three straight possessions at the end of regulation and in overtime, any one of which could have lost the game. (The fake FG doesn't really count because it was a special teams play.)Craighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18230182384316801468noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15561288.post-43919964706534244902010-09-22T02:50:32.442-04:002010-09-22T02:50:32.442-04:00We all badly want to see this ND team have some su...We all badly want to see this ND team have some success! Even giving up 28 points in regulation to MSU and UM only means that they let those teams convert on 4 out of 13/17 chances. That's about 30% conversion of possession to points.. which is probably better than any defense we've fielded the past few years.

Meanwhile.. our scoring drives against MSU averaged less than 3 minutes of possession and none of our drives was over 5 minutes. If we keep the running game as part of our balanced attack it gives our defense a break and allows us to wear down opposing defenses. We can transition back to the 'Time-of-Posession be damned' mentality when our offense is in a better rhythm and is scoring more regularly.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
